TEST FLUID: DIVERSE, DEPENDS ON EXPERIMENT’S CONDITIONS
The rotating test rig refers to a Taylor-Couette setup with the aim to evaluate different surface structures in their fluid-dynamic interaction. To examine effects on the flow conditions two coaxial arranged metal cylinders with respective surface properties, and their gap filled with deionized water, rotate to each other while the resistance torque is recorded.

This results in a characteristic Drag Reduction Curve of the surface texture, which describes the decrease of fluid-dynamic friction depending on the rotational speed. While our focus lies on the evaluation of Riblets, all surface textures ranging from 20µm to 200µm roughness depth are applicable for the experiment.

    Pipe Flow Test Rig

    TEST FLUID: WATER
    Arranged as a pump circuit with an intermediary pipe segment, the flow conditions within the pipe are evaluated by measuring the pressure gradient and deriving relevant flux values from that. For a proper comparison half of the pipe shows a smooth surface, while the other half has a textured surface, whose influence on the fluid-dynamic properties is the experiment’s focus.

    Friction Coefficient

    The experiment’s results are displayed by a characteristic Performance Curve, which states the surface performance at different operating points. Significant results can be attained at Reynolds Numbers ranging from 5x104 to 7,5x105 and hydraulically smooth surfaces to surfaces with roughness depths of 1 mm.
