LEARN MORE
Converting Aerodynamic Efficiency into Operational Value
Targeted Riblet surface engineering optimizes local airflow to deliver immediate, quantifiable financial and environmental returns for airline fleets and aerospace operators.

Reduce Fuel Consumption & Costs

Directly reduce turbulent skin-friction drag across high-shear airframe zones to lower fuel burn and cut direct operating costs.

Lower Operational Emissions

Convert reduced fuel burn into immediate CO2 and exhaust savings, supporting airline decarbonization targets and regulatory compliance.

Extend Range & Mission Flexibility

Transform aerodynamic efficiency gains into increased operational range, higher payload capacity, or improved cruise speed on the same fuel load.

Seamless Fleet Integration

Fully retrofittable during routine scheduled maintenance: delivering immediate operational benefits with zero additional aircraft downtime or structural airframe modifications.
Putting Riblets where they matter most.
Rather than uniformly covering an airframe, we use aerodynamic intelligence to target high-shear stress zones, minimizing material usage, weight, and installation effort. Powered by our proprietary IP and patented zonal surface application strategy, we identify and equip the most effective areas that deliver highest performance return per area.

High-Impact Application Strategy.
Depending on operational priorities, fleet deployment can be flexibly scaled across key airframe zones—from compact, high-efficiency regions like the nacelles and empennage to extensive coverage across the wings and fuselage. This modular approach allows operators to balance application scope and maintenance downtime against total targeted fuel burn savings.
The world leading Riblets expert
bionic surface technologies is a global research and development company based in Graz, Austria, specialized in the development and optimization of surface textures and the testing and evaluation of these. The focus of BST lies on Riblet surfaces which are nano- or micro-structures to reduce fluid-dynamic drag.
General CFD analysis, as a substantial tool of modern engineering, is demanded across all industries and covered by BST with an additional specialization in pulp & paper, acoustics and microfluidics. The offerings of BST are complemented by testing and evaluating their surface texture solutions on in-house test facilities. A significant effort at BST is put into the further advancement of Riblet technology by conducting publicly- and self-funded research.

  • If you risk a daredevil stunt you need partners to rely on. BST´s expertise in CFD provided data to clarify whether such a risky stunt could even be realized and to determine how sensitive the aircraft responds to certain parameters. Furthermore, BST’s Riblets served as an important safety aspect in the Tunnel Pass Project. The Riblet surfaces were used to absorb and compensate ground-level turbulences in the air. The special structure of the Riblets and the tailor-made rudder tips increased the stability of the entire aircraft. BST´s engineers were extremely responsive and provided an exceptional level of service to meet the challenge.
