LEARN MORE
Key Parameters of Surface Structures.
Unlocking the full potential of aerodynamic drag reduction is a complex multi-variable challenge. Riblet performance is determined by an interconnected set of aerodynamic, geometric, and operational parameters. Treating any single factor in isolation, or scaling dimensions without accounting for local flow behavior, compromises overall efficiency. True drag reduction requires resolving these variables as an integrated system, aligning microscopic geometry and flow orientation with local shear dynamics and real-world operating conditions.

Operation Conditions

The cross-sectional shape determines the interaction with turbulent wall vortices.
Riblet dimensions must match the local flow conditions and wall-shear stress.
Micro- grooves alignment is critical for flow stability and Riblet effectiveness.
Flow conditions vary according to their exact locations and so must Riblets.
Achieving the full potential Riblet potential requires excellent Riblet geometry and precise manufacturing.
Demanding operating environments require durable structures with highest material standards
Advanced Surface Architecture: A Breakthrough in Drag Reduction
Micro-scale grooves aligned with the flow direction interact with the turbulent boundary layer. By lifting and pinning near-wall turbulent vortices away from the surface, they restrict lateral momentum exchange and suppress wall-shear stress, and thereby significantly reduce turbulent skin friction.

Alternating Valley (AV) Riblets
Driven by extensive continuous fluid-dynamic research, BST has evolved this mechanism beyond static, uniform micro-grooves. Our proprietary Alternating Valley (AV) Riblets introduce periodically varying geometries in the flow direction. This structural evolution delivers markedly higher efficiency, unlocking greater drag reduction and more stable performance across real-world operating conditions.
Validated Aerodynamic Superiority.
While other solutions rely on uniform microstructures, our proprietary AV Riblets introduce varying geometries that actively manipulate turbulent boundary layers. Independently validated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), AV Riblets outperform conventional Riblet solutions. Ongoing optimization and numerical validation projects up to 12% local drag reduction.

Experimentally validated local Drag Reduction.
0%
More effective than other Riblet surface solutions.
+0%
Potential efficiency gain at full surface coverage.
Ongoing numerical simulations project up to 12% local drag reduction, unlocking over 50% higher performance versus conventional Riblets and an airframe net gain potential of up to 6%. This next-generation architecture is currently entering a multi-year experimental validation and product development process.
The world leading Riblets expert
bionic surface technologies is a global research and development company based in Graz, Austria, specialized in the development and optimization of surface textures and the testing and evaluation of these. The focus of BST lies on Riblet surfaces which are nano- or micro-structures to reduce fluid-dynamic drag.
General CFD analysis, as a substantial tool of modern engineering, is demanded across all industries and covered by BST with an additional specialization in pulp & paper, acoustics and microfluidics. The offerings of BST are complemented by testing and evaluating their surface texture solutions on in-house test facilities. A significant effort at BST is put into the further advancement of Riblet technology by conducting publicly- and self-funded research.

  • If you risk a daredevil stunt you need partners to rely on. BST´s expertise in CFD provided data to clarify whether such a risky stunt could even be realized and to determine how sensitive the aircraft responds to certain parameters. Furthermore, BST’s Riblets served as an important safety aspect in the Tunnel Pass Project. The Riblet surfaces were used to absorb and compensate ground-level turbulences in the air. The special structure of the Riblets and the tailor-made rudder tips increased the stability of the entire aircraft. BST´s engineers were extremely responsive and provided an exceptional level of service to meet the challenge.
